Daniel Hemric returns to the Cup Series
Daniel Hemric, the reigning champion of the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series, is in the midst of completing his second consecutive full-time season in the Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing, while also contending in the playoffs for the 2023 championship. Hemric has previous full-time experience in the Cup Series, having raced in this category for Richard Childress Racing in 2019, a year that also saw him earn the Sunoco Rookie of the Year accolade.
Describing the significance of the moment, Hemric shared his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to achieve something remarkable with a dedicated team. He emphasized his commitment to ending the season on a high note and expressed eagerness to start the offseason preparations with the Kaulig Racing crew.
Hemric’s association with Kaulig Racing began in 2022, with the aim of securing back-to-back Xfinity titles. During the 2022 season, he also participated in selected Cup Series races for the team. In total, Hemric has made 47 starts in the Cup Series, a journey that includes earning a Busch Light Pole Award, a top-five finish, three top-10 finishes, and leading for a total of 22 laps.
Originally from Kannapolis, North Carolina, Hemric was a full-time Cup Series driver for Richard Childress Racing in 2019, followed by a part-time Xfinity Series stint with JR Motorsports in 2020. He eventually captured the 2021 Xfinity Series title while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Hemric remained resilient and unwavering. He expressed gratitude to Kaulig Racing’s owner, Matt Kaulig, and president Chris Rice, for their unwavering support, especially during uncertain times in 2021. Hemric shared that he was convinced to join the team after understanding their long-term vision and aspirations.
Chris Rice acknowledged Hemric’s toughness and resilience, emphasizing his belief in the Kaulig Racing culture and his ability to contribute positively to the team’s growth and success.
Hemric is set to fill the seat vacated by Justin Haley, who announced his move to Rick Ware Racing on July 20 after finalizing a multi-year deal.
Over the years, Kaulig Racing has witnessed significant growth, evolving from a single-car Xfinity team in 2016 to a three-car team in the same series. The team made its Cup Series debut in 2020 and established a full-time presence with two chartered cars two years later.
In 2022, Hemric participated in nine Cup races for Kaulig Racing, gaining valuable experience in NASCAR’s premier division and with the Next Gen car. His standout performance was a ninth-place finish at Auto Club Speedway, a result that was even more impressive considering he overcame a six-lap deficit caused by an early mechanical issue.
Reflecting on this experience, Hemric shared his realization that he belonged at this level of competition and his determination to find a way back to a full-time Cup seat. His perseverance paid off, earning him a full-time ride in Kaulig Racing’s No. 31 car for the 2024 season.
Further details regarding team partnerships will be disclosed soon, as stated by Kaulig Racing.
