Shakeups at Legacy Motor Club include exit of Jason Burdett

Veteran NASCAR crew chief Jason Burdett was let go from LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, as confirmed by the team to Racing America on Friday. This decision comes amid broader personnel changes for the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE.

Burdett joined LEGACY MOTOR CLUB at the start of the season to lead the team for seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and co-owner Jimmie Johnson. However, after six races together, their best results were two 28th-place finishes at Daytona International Speedway and Dover Motor Speedway.

Prior to this role, the 45-year-old crew chief had a successful nine-season tenure with JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he secured 18 victories working with drivers like Regan Smith, Justin Allgaier, and Brandon Jones.

In addition to Burdett’s departure, other adjustments have been made to the team’s staff for the No. 84 Toyota Camry. Despite these changes, Johnson’s schedule for the remainder of the season remains unaffected, with the car still set to compete at Kansas Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Phoenix Raceway for the season finale. Nevertheless, his schedule for 2025 is up for debate.

Since his return to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023, Johnson has worked with two crew chiefs—Todd Gordon and Jason Burdett. Out of nine races in the seventh-generation car, Johnson has achieved a best finish of 28th and experienced five DNFs. In interviews, he has admitted that he doesn’t yet have a handle on driving the Next Gen car. As someone used to driving off the right rear tire, it’s simply not possible in this car, and it’s caused him significant struggle to date.

Johnson’s latest race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway showed promise, with the 83-time Cup Series winner running within the top 15 at times before ultimately being involved in a crash during the final stage.

With 2025 looking sketchy as far as any kind of race schedule for the 84 team, and Johnson admitting this week that team ownership has been far tougher than he expected, it’s anyone’s guess as to what happens next.
