New Rule awards a point to the Fastest Lap in each Race

Fastest Lap gets a point

NASCAR has announced a new rule that grants a point to the team and driver who set the fastest single lap during each race.

This change is part of an agreement with Xfinity, which has renewed its contract with NASCAR. The new rule, dubbed the “Xfinity Fastest Lap,” will apply to all three of NASCAR’s national series, rewarding the fastest lap in each race. Additionally, the deal extends Xfinity’s role as the entitlement sponsor of NASCAR’s second-tier series through 2025. It also includes a multiyear extension for Xfinity’s premium partnership with the Cup Series.

While IndyCar has a similar rule, Formula 1 eliminated its fast-lap point system for this season.

“We’re not just entering Year 11 of our partnership. We’re embarking on Year 1 of a renewed relationship with NASCAR filled with fresh energy and exciting opportunities to enhance the competition on the track in a way that has never been done before,” said Matt Lederer, Comcast’s vice president of brand partnership and engagement.
