New NASCAR docuseries coming to Netflix
NASCAR and Netflix have joined forces to create a new documentary series, unveiling their collaborative effort on Monday. This series aims to provide a comprehensive look at the 2023 Cup Series Playoffs.
Produced in conjunction with Words + Pictures and NASCAR Studios, the docuseries is set to make its debut on Netflix in the early months of 2024. Viewers can anticipate a detailed exploration of the Cup Series postseason, delivered through five 45-minute episodes, offering a backstage pass to the events.
Production for the series is already underway, intending to chronicle the championship journeys of the 16 competing drivers across the 10 crucial races of the playoffs. The series is set to kick off on September 3 at Darlington Raceway, while the regular season will wrap up with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway this Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. This final regular-season race will also serve to finalize the roster of drivers moving on to the playoffs.
The production team for this docuseries features an impressive lineup, including NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ben Kennedy, Tim Clark, Matt Summers, and Tally Hair from NASCAR Studios. They will be working in collaboration with Connor Schell and Libby Geist, both of whom have experience working on “The Last Dance 30 for 30” and “OJ: Made in America,” as well as Aaron Cohen from Words + Pictures.
This announcement comes on the heels of the “Race for the Championship” series, which provided a unique and personal perspective on the lives of NASCAR drivers during the 2022 season, both on and off the track.
The new, yet-to-be-titled series is a continuation of Netflix’s ventures into sports documentaries, following successful releases centered around the NFL, Formula 1, the PGA Tour, and professional tennis. Netflix is also in the process of developing content featuring track and field athletes, the U.S. women’s soccer team, and rugby players.
