NASCAR to manage Bowman Gray

NASCAR has assumed control of racing operations at Bowman Gray Stadium, a historic short track in North Carolina, with the aim of securing its future. The sanctioning body has taken over the lease until December 2050 to ensure continuity for the venue, which has been hosting grassroots events since 1949.

The Hawkins family, who have managed the track for generations under Winston-Salem Speedway, Inc., will continue to be involved. Austin Shuford, with experience from Track Enterprises, has been appointed as the new general manager.

Discussions about NASCAR’s involvement began over two years ago, initiated by Gray Garrison, the grandson of Alvin Hawkins, during a test of NASCAR’s Next Gen car at Bowman Gray. Garrison, deeply connected to the stadium, recognizes the importance of NASCAR’s support for its future.

While NASCAR’s increased involvement may lead to speculation about national series events, for now, the focus remains on maintaining the grassroots racing experience. Garrison emphasizes NASCAR’s commitment to fostering growth in the racing community as a whole.
