NASCAR has introduced a major leadership shift, naming Steve Phelps as the sport’s first-ever Commissioner. In this role, he will oversee all aspects of NASCAR, including IMSA and its 15 owned or operated tracks, with a focus on strategic growth and international expansion.
Steve O’Donnell has been promoted to NASCAR President, taking over Phelps’ former responsibilities. He will now manage day-to-day operations across NASCAR’s national and international series, as well as its commercial, media, and track operations.
“We are thrilled to name Steve Phelps as NASCAR’s first Commissioner,” said NASCAR Chairman & CEO Jim France. “With more than 50 years of expertise between them, both Steve Phelps and Steve O’Donnell bring tremendous expertise, stability and a commitment to bold racing innovations.”
Phelps, who joined NASCAR in 2005 and served as President since 2018, will continue working closely with NASCAR ownership while enhancing global fan engagement. O’Donnell, a 30-year NASCAR veteran, will oversee competition, operations, and the sport’s investments in media and content creation.
Both appointments are effective immediately.
