Matt Kenseth joins Legacy Motor Club
Legacy Motor Club has welcomed NASCAR Hall of Famer Matt Kenseth to their team to function as a competition adviser. Effective immediately, Kenseth steps into this role during a crucial transitional period to the team’s inaugural season under the Legacy M.C. brand.
The 51-year-old, celebrated as a 39-time winner in Cup Series races and the champion of the series in 2003, is expected to provide valuable support in the team’s transition from Chevrolet to Toyota in 2024. In addition, Kenseth will take on a mentorship role for Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, completing the lineup of drivers for the NASCAR Cup Series in the upcoming year.
Kenseth’s addition to the team unites him with co-owner Jimmie Johnson, who is set to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The two share a deep mutual respect rooted in their time as competitors and friends.
The appointment sees Kenseth return to familiar territory, as he previously competed in the Cup Series, concluding his time there in 2020—the same year that marked the end of Johnson’s full-time NASCAR career. Their bond has since continued to grow, with both individuals pursuing marathon running in recent times; Kenseth participated in the Boston Marathon in 2022, and Johnson completed the marathon distance in 2019.
Jimmie Johnson has expressed his elation over the alliance, emphasizing Kenseth’s vast experience, sharp intellect, and unwavering competitive spirit. He highlighted Kenseth’s familiarity with Toyota from his time at Joe Gibbs Racing and praised his athleticism and physical fitness.
The inception of Legacy Motor Club came about through the amalgamation of Richard Petty Motorsports and GMS Racing, with Jimmie Johnson joining the ownership group in the preceding autumn. Joey Cohen, currently serving as the Vice President of Racing Operations for Legacy M.C., has previous experience working with Kenseth during their shared tenure under team owner Jack Roush. Cohen is confident that Kenseth’s guidance will be pivotal in ensuring a smooth transition to Toyota, emphasizing his status as one of the sport’s top drivers and the invaluable nature of his insights for both the drivers and crew members as they prepare for the next season.
