Legacy Motor Club Sues Rick Ware Racing

A legal dispute has erupted between two NASCAR Cup Series teams as Legacy Motor Club filed a lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing (RWR) over a charter sale that appears to have unraveled.

The conflict stems from a deal that was first discussed on January 6 and reportedly finalized on March 3, according to Legacy Motor Club. While the financial details of the agreement have not been made public, NASCAR charters in recent years have been valued as high as $40 million. Legacy now alleges that RWR is backing out of the deal.

Sources familiar with the case, though not authorized to speak publicly, say the disagreement centers on when the charter transfer was supposed to take place. Legacy, co-owned by seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, is said to have altered the year of execution in the agreement—moving it from 2027 to 2026—without informing RWR team owner Rick Ware or his representatives.

RWR responded to the lawsuit with a firm denial, stating:
“This lawsuit distorts the actual facts and is a misguided attempt to tarnish our reputation. RWR has negotiated in good faith and operated with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We are confident that the truth will prevail and look forward to swiftly resolving this matter through the proper legal channels.”

The dispute adds to the growing tension in NASCAR’s charter system, which has faced increased scrutiny as teams seek more control and transparency over charter ownership and future valuations.
