Last week, Legacy Motor Club (LMC) took legal action against Rick Ware Racing (RWR), filing a lawsuit in Mecklenburg County over a disputed charter agreement. LMC claims RWR is attempting to back out of a signed deal that would transfer ownership of one of RWR’s charters to Legacy.
This week, Legacy filed for a temporary restraining order (TRO) in a North Carolina court and it was granted, barring RWR from selling, leasing, or otherwise encumbering the charter while the case proceeds. The court sided with LMC on several key points, including a likely chance of success in the lawsuit and the risk of irreparable harm if the charter is not protected during litigation.
Currently, LMC owns two charters and fields the No. 42 and No. 43 cars, along with a part-time unchartered No. 84 entry. RWR also controls two charters—leasing one to RFK Racing for the No. 60 and using the other for their No. 51 car, which ranks last among all chartered teams. RWR additionally runs the unchartered No. 01 entry part-time.
On a recent episode of the Dale Jr. Download, it was reported the charter deal is valued at a record-breaking $45 million. According to court documents, RWR allegedly signed the agreement on March 3, including initials on each page. However, RWR is now disputing the timing, claiming they believed the deal was for 2027—not 2026—prompting their hesitation to move forward.
