Larson Dominates Longest Race of the Season
LAP 1: Kyle Larson won the pole in qualifying and led the field to green. He was able to pull away from the rest of the pack as his teammate, Chase Elliott, settled into 2nd place.
LAP 47: Martin Truex Jr kicked off Green flag pit stops and triggered most of the field to come down pit road as well. When the field cycled through, Kyle Larson picked up the lead again with a 3-second gap to 2nd place.
LAP 96: Daniel Suarez, who had been running 11th, had to make an unscheduled pit stop after his right front tire went down. The stop caused him to go 2 laps down.
STAGE 1 END – LAP 100: Kyle Larson won the stage and picked up the playoff point. Elliott, William Byron, Kevin Harvick, and Austin Dillon rounded out the top 5 at the end of the segment. Larson won the race off pit road and was able to maintain P1 following the restart.
CAUTION – LAP 173: Several laps after going to the garage with an engine issue, Kurt Busch returned to the track where his engine expired on the backstretch. The yellow flag waved for fluid on track and Busch was out of the race.
STAGE 2 END – LAP 200: Larson won the stage and gained another playoff point. His teammates Chase Elliott and William Byron, as well as Kyle Busch and Tyler Reddick, completed the Top 5. The entire field was brought down pit road where all crew members, officials, and fans stood for a moment of silence to honor USA service men and women since it was Memorial Day Weekend. Larson won the race off pit road to remain in the lead for the 3rd stage.
CAUTION – LAP 295: The yellow came out for the #6 of Ryan Newman after his tire blew in Turn 3. This sent Newman into the SAFER barrier and badly damaged the right side of his Ford Mustang.
STAGE 3 END – LAP 300: The stage ended under caution, allowing Kyle Larson to pick up his 3rd victory of the night. Byron, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, and Alex Bowman all completed the top 5. Bowman won the race off pit road following a 2-tire stop, however, he was quickly passed by Larson on the restart.
CHECKERED FLAG – LAP 400: Kyle Larson crossed the line almost 11-seconds ahead of the rest of the field to win the prestigious Coca-Cola 600. This was his 2nd victory of the season and it made history for Hendrick Motorsports as they became the winningest team in NASCAR with 269 victories.
