Backstretch Alterations to Talladega after Bell/Buescher Crash

Following a pair of hard crashes at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR officials have confirmed plans to modify a problematic section of the inside wall before the series returns in the fall.

During a mid-race restart, Christopher Bell and Chris Buescher collided at the exit of Turn 2. Bell’s No. 20 Toyota slammed head-on into the inside wall, destroying the front of the car, while Buescher also hit hard and reported significant pain over the radio. Both drivers were treated and released from the infield care center.

The crashes occurred at a section of wall that juts out toward the track to allow emergency vehicle access. Although speeds hadn’t peaked yet, the impacts were severe—especially Bell’s, which wasn’t the first at that spot in recent years.

NASCAR officials acknowledged the wall’s design has contributed to repeat incidents. The angled section will be straightened and reshaped during the summer to reduce the risk of similar wrecks before the October playoff race.
