23X1 Expands with Riley Herbst to the #35 Toyota
23XI Racing is set to expand to a three-car operation in 2025. Riley Herbst has been tapped to drive the No. 35 Monster Energy Toyota Camry XSE, with Davin Restivo as crew chief.
Herbst has competed in eight NASCAR Cup Series races, including four in 2023 and another four this season, with a career-best finish of 9th. In 2024, he secured two Xfinity Series wins, claiming victories at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the season finale at Phoenix Raceway.
“It’s an honor to join 23XI and Toyota for the opportunity to race in the Cup Series each week,” Herbst said. “Racing full-time in the Cup Series has been my goal since I started in NASCAR, and I’m excited to start my Cup career with such an accomplished and driven team.”
Steve Lauletta, 23XI Team President, highlighted the organization’s growth and confidence in Herbst. “We have a very solid foundation with both Bubba and Tyler, and we know they will be a great resource for Riley as he begins his journey in the Cup Series.”
Monster Energy, Herbst’s longtime sponsor, reaffirmed its support. “Riley Herbst has built his career with Monster Energy, and he is part of the family,” said Mitch Covington, Monster Energy’s SVP of Sports Marketing.
However, the organization’s decision has sparked backlash. Critics argue that more accomplished drivers were overlooked for the No. 35 seat, calling Herbst’s selection underwhelming. Additionally, the expansion raises questions amid 23XI’s ongoing anti-trust lawsuit against NASCAR. Many fans and industry insiders see this move as contradicting the team’s legal challenge, which addresses systemic issues in the sport’s structure, including the charter system.
