If you are a fan of auto racing you know that Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an iconic track that’s held in high esteem. This track is home to the Indy 500 and also plays an important role in the NASCAR Cup Series as host to one of the sport’s Crown Jewel races.
Luckily, you don’t have to have to tickets in order to visit the speedway and get a feel for what its all about. It’s possible to visit and tour the facilities, even when the main track is closed. Grounds Tours are a favourite to entertain family, friends or clients with a 60- to 90-minute visit rich in the history and landmarks of the Speedway. Highlights include:
- A narrated bus ride around the famed 2.5-mile track in one of the Speedway’s comfortable tour buses, culminating in a photo stop at the Yard of Bricks. This is your opportunity to soak in the atmosphere of the racetrack from the perspective of a driver, though at an entirely different speed, and kiss the bricks or get your picture taken in the middle of the track!
- A knowledgeable staff of the Hall of Fame Museum will host your tour, providing you with a narrated historical journey through the decades at the Racing Capital of the World®.
- Your journey includes visits to places normally open only to officials, drivers, and teams during race events. Those typically include the timing-and-scoring suite in the Pagoda, the Media Center, Victory Podium, Gasoline Alley garages and one of the typical hospitality suites.
- Your tour includes a visit to the Hall of Fame Museum, which can be started either before or after your bus journey. You can view a 20-minute video on the history of the track, see the cars that have won the Indianapolis 500 as well as NASCAR, Formula One, motorcycles and more. You also can enjoy the classic lines of a variety of antique passenger cars as well as a variety of race trophies and other memorabilia.
Tours are scheduled to depart from the Hall of Fame Museum at 9:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 3 p.m. ET. The Museum is located at 4790 W. 16th Street, Speedway, IN, 46224, inside the track between turns 1 and 2. The entrance to the museum is located at Gate 2 on the north side of 16th Street. This is marked by a large, white “Hall of Fame Museum Entrance” sign on the west side of the entrance. View Directions

Your experience doesn’t have to end with just a tour. It’s possible to partake in The Indy Racing Experience Driving Program which gives you the chance to learn what it’s like to drive a real NTT IndyCar Series car that has competed in the famed Indianapolis 500. You’ll feel the rush of excitement as you follow a lead NTT IndyCar Series car around the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Speeds are dependent upon each customer’s comfort level in the car.
The Indy Racing Experience Two-Seat Ride allows the passenger to experience speeds and g-forces previously available to only a handful of elite drivers. The purpose-built Dallara chassis allows a passenger to sit behind the driver, but in every other way, this is a true NTT IndyCar Series car. The car is complete with an authentic racing engine that can power the car up to 180 mph.
A selected number of Indy Racing Experience days are available at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the option to drive, ride-along, or combine the two. There is also the option for a Club Ride Experience with the legendary Mario Andretti, but this is a rare one-day-only event that sells out quickly. Prices start at $499 USD and vary depending on the experience chosen. Several additional tracks feature the Indy Racing Experience on select dates, including Pocono Raceway, Iowa Speedway, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Texas Motor Speedway, Road America, Gateway Motorsports Park, and through the streets of Toronto during IndyCar weekend.
