For thrill-seekers and speed demons, the Pocono Region offers several different ways to get your fix. First, there’s Pocono Raceway, featuring high-speed NASCAR and IndyCar races on a 2.5-mile unique track of only 3 corners, affectionately dubbed the Tricky Triangle. Next, there are several different driver experiences held at Pocono Raceway, including ProKart Racing, driving or riding along in a stock car, and driving an exotic car on the track. There are a handful of outdoor go-kart tracks in and around the region, there’s Hamlin Speedway for slingshot car action on a Saturday night, and then there is S & S Speedways, located in Stroudsburg.
S & S Speedways is an indoor, family-oriented complex featuring go-karts decked out to resemble quarter midget race cars. The track is short and slick, designed to give guests a unique karting experience that simulates driving on a dirt track. If you’re not sliding while cornering, you’re not doing it right and will likely end up spinning on track or slamming into the tire barriers. It might take a few laps to perfect the technique but eventually, you’ll feel like Cup Series driver Kyle Larson running at Eldora as you slide the turns and skid past your competitors.
Plenty of signage that depicts past eras of racing is featured on the walls of the enclosed track area while lifesize standups of a young Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, on old Coke and Pepsi ads, are displayed in a small arcade area that assists in providing extra entertainment. It’s truly like time has stood still for this family-fun attraction, with a throwback feel to the late 70s/early 80s. With this in mind, rules are somewhat lax and there are no helmets, so it’s necessary to use a little common sense if you plan to drive the karts. For men or women with long hair, it is strongly advised to tie it up and out of the way so it doesn’t get sucked into the motor located behind the seat.
Given the many references to NASCAR, it’s not so surprising that S & S Speedways lures the drivers when they’re in town. They’ve also been known to host private parties so they can test their skills on the track. So if you happen to go on a race weekend, you never know who you might see while you’re there. To that end, be sure to check out the speedways ‘Wall of Fame’, which features photos of NASCAR drivers that have attended S & S, including Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kurt Busch, and Kevin Harvick. More recently, Corie Lajoie and Daniel Suarez visited and did a few laps just for fun.
Pricing is reasonable with 1 race costing $10 (USD), 4 races at $30, and 8 races at $50, with each “race” consisting of 5 laps. Every 2nd & 4th Friday of the month, guests can ride all night for $40.
The speedway is open 7 days a week, though hours vary. And it is available to rent for private parties and events. For more information, you can visit the S & S Speedways website HERE.
