Reddick from Last to First twice at Bristol

Before the Food City 300 race at the iconic Bristol Motor Speedway, all eyes were on Tyler Reddick as his car failed pre-race inspection 4 times. Reddick was not allowed to qualify for the race and was given an automatic 38th place starting position. His car chief was ejected from the garage area and Reddick was forced to serve a pass-thru penalty when the green flag waved, essentially starting him a lap down.

LAP 1: Pole-sitter Austin Cindric was immediately overtaken by Kyle Busch on the outside lane. Busch took the preferred line and pulled away from the rest of the field.

CAUTION – LAP 7: The #68 Chevrolet of Mason Diaz blew the right front tire and hit the SAFER barrier. He came to a stop on the backstretch, triggering the first caution of the race. As it turned out, it was the first of many yellows throughout the night.

CAUTION – LAP 36: While battling for third position, Cole Custer and Christopher Bell came upon lapped traffic. The #5 of Matt Mills came up and squeezed Custer against the outside wall. Custer’s #00 bounced off the wall, making contact with the #20 of Bell and turning him sideways on the backstretch. Directly behind the incident was Erik Jones and Joey Logano, neither of which could stop in time or avoid the tangled cars so they were collected in the wreck.  Both Jones and Logano sustained considerable damage and retired from the race.

CAUTION – LAP 50: The #23 of John Hunter Nemechek slowed considerably on track due to an unkown issue and tried to get to pit road. Nemechek spun on the apron but the caution was not thrown. Nemechek corrected and drove to the pit entrance where he spun again, this time bringing out the yellow.

LAP 61:  Justin Allgaier in the #7 made a bold move on the inside of Kyle Busch for the lead. Busch put up a strong fight despite being passed and hn tight with Allgaier, proving they were on par when it came to speed.

CAUTION – LAP 72: The yellow flag waved for debris in Turn 2. With only 13 laps left in the stage, Kyle Busch opted to pit while Allgaier stayed out. Tyler Reddick, who encountered issues at the start, made his way through the field to P2, next to Allgaier.

CAUTION – LAP 81: While racing for the top spot, the #2 of Tyler Reddick got caught in the side draft of Justin Allgaier and spun in Turn 4. Allgaier slowed, which allowed Brandon Jones to slip by on the bottom.

STAGE 1 END – LAP 85: The stage ended under caution with Brandon Jones being scored P1 and taking the segment victory. Jones picked up the playoff points

CAUTION – LAP 119: Ronnie Bassett Jr experienced a unique issue when the left-rear wheel snapped off the car. But it wasn’t just the tire.  It was the entire wheel including the bearing, rotor, and axel which broke right out of the car. Bassett went sliding into Turn 2 before ploughing into the sand barrels at the entrance to pit road. The race was red flagged while crews cleaned up the wreckage.

STAGE 2 END – LAP 170: Leader Kyle Busch began having issues with his engine with 5 laps to go in the stage. With 2 laps to go the car was smoking, and by the time he crossed the line to end the stage, the engine in his #18 Toyota Supra had expired. Busch went straight to the garage where his race came to an end.

CAUTION – LAP 221: Michael Annett in the #1 Chevrolet Camaro got loose and spun in Turn 4, crushing the left-rear quarter panel against the wall. Justin Allgaier stayed out, keeping his first position, while Tyler Reddick came out of the pits 3rd with fresh tire.

CAUTION – LAP 281: The final caution flag of the race came with just 19 laps to go. It was waved for fluid on the track as reported by several drivers.

LAP 289: Justin Allgaier, who had hung onto the lead from the restart, suddenly had a tire go down and had to pit before it blew, essentially handing the lead to Tyler Reddick.

LAP 300: Reddick came all the way through the field to win his 3rd race of the season, solidifying himself as one of the “Big Three” contenders for the championship beside Christopher Bell and Cole Custer.
